Project details
Wigan Town Hall brings together council services within a modern civic workplace while celebrating the character of one of the town's most important historic buildings. The project combines workplace strategy with the sensitive refurbishment of a heritage asset, creating an environment that supports collaboration, public service and the continued regeneration of Wigan town centre.
Wigan Council appointed GT3 to help deliver its vision for a modern, efficient workplace that would bring together a range of council departments within a single civic hub. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the project combined workplace consultancy with architectural design to create a flexible environment that supports collaboration, improves operational efficiency and provides a better experience for both staff and visitors.
The refurbishment carefully balances the preservation of the Town Hall’s historic character with the requirements of a contemporary workplace. Original architectural features have been restored and celebrated, while new interventions improve accessibility, circulation and flexibility throughout the building. Open-plan workspaces, meeting areas and shared environments encourage greater interaction between teams while creating a workplace that is adaptable to future organisational change.
As part of Wigan’s wider regeneration strategy, the completed project demonstrates how historic civic buildings can be successfully adapted to meet the needs of modern public services while safeguarding their long-term future.
