Project details
Slough Ice Arena reimagines a much-loved community facility for a new generation of users. Transforming a 1980s ice rink into a contemporary leisure destination, the project combines the refurbishment of the existing arena with a significant extension, creating a more welcoming, flexible and commercially sustainable venue that continues to serve both elite sport and everyday community use.
Originally constructed in the mid-1980s as the home of the Slough Jets Ice Hockey Club, the existing arena had become dated and no longer reflected the expectations of a modern leisure facility. The brief was to retain the building’s important role within the community while broadening its appeal and improving the overall visitor experience.
The project stripped the original building back to its structural frame before introducing a 1,000m² two-storey extension containing a new entrance, reception, café, gym and climbing wall. The existing arena was comprehensively refurbished with a new ice rink, glazed rink barriers, upgraded changing facilities, improved spectator seating and enhanced lighting, creating a modern leisure destination capable of supporting a far wider range of users.
Delivered as part of Slough Borough Council’s wider leisure investment programme, the transformed arena has become an important destination for ice hockey, figure skating, public skating and inclusive community programmes, while continuing to host the Slough Jets and national television productions including Dancing on Ice. The project was completed ahead of programme and has since received national recognition for both its architectural quality and community impact.
