Project details
One Harton Quay is an award-winning Grade A office development that helped redefine South Shields' waterfront. Designed as a catalyst for regeneration, the scheme reconnects the town centre with the River Tyne while providing high-quality, sustainable workspace that established a new benchmark for commercial development within the region.
Developed for South Tyneside Council in collaboration with One North East, One Harton Quay formed a key part of the wider regeneration of the South Shields riverside. The brief called for a contemporary office building that would attract inward investment while creating a lasting connection between the town centre and the waterfront.
The building’s distinctive form is defined by a series of landscaped ‘slipways’ that separate the office accommodation, creating pedestrian routes that draw people towards the River Tyne. Providing approximately 50,000 square feet of Grade A office space, the development was designed to British Council for Offices standards and became the headquarters for BT, reflecting the company’s values of accessibility, collaboration and innovation. Internally, flexible, energy-efficient workspaces support employee wellbeing while accommodating the practical needs of a modern corporate occupier.
The scheme has received widespread architectural recognition for its contribution to regeneration and placemaking, demonstrating how high-quality commercial development can become a catalyst for wider economic investment while enhancing the public realm.
