Project details
Highlight Active Wellbeing Hub is a landmark waterfront destination that brings together leisure, health and wellbeing within a single community-focused facility. Located at Hartlepool Marina, the project forms a key part of the wider Waterfront regeneration, creating a contemporary environment that encourages people of all ages to be active, social and connected.
Developed as the replacement for the ageing Mill House Leisure Centre, Highlight Active Wellbeing Hub redefines the role of a modern leisure centre by combining sport, health and community services within one integrated destination. The building has been carefully positioned to maximise views across Hartlepool Marina, with its distinctive linear form drawing inspiration from the historic railway lines that once served the former dockland.
The facility includes an eight-lane 25-metre community pool, a four-lane learner pool with a movable floor, a leisure pool with interactive water play and a race slide, a 100-station fitness suite, interconnected fitness studios, an indoor cycling studio, active and soft play, café, meeting spaces and NHS consultation suites. External terraces and direct connections to the marina encourage outdoor activity and strengthen links with the surrounding waterfront.
Designed through extensive stakeholder engagement, the project creates a flexible, inclusive environment that supports everyday wellbeing while acting as a catalyst for the continued regeneration of Hartlepool’s waterfront.

Commercial Value
Highlight strengthens Hartlepool’s leisure and visitor offer by creating a destination capable of attracting residents and visitors throughout the year. Its mix of leisure, health and community facilities broadens operational opportunities, increases visitor dwell time and supports the ongoing regeneration of the waterfront. The project has also delivered significant local economic benefits, with more than £14 million spent with local suppliers during construction.

Social Impact
Designed around health and wellbeing, Highlight creates opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active within a welcoming and accessible environment. The integration of NHS consultation suites alongside sport and leisure facilities promotes a preventative approach to health, while community spaces, inclusive changing facilities and direct links to the marina encourage greater participation, social interaction and active lifestyles.
