Colchester Sports Hub is a landmark multi-sport destination that brings elite performance, grassroots participation and community wellbeing together within a single integrated campus. Designed as part of Colchester's Northern Gateway regeneration, the development provides world-class sporting facilities while creating an accessible environment that encourages people of all ages and abilities to lead more active lifestyles.
Delivered for Colchester Borough Council, the Sports Hub forms the centrepiece of the Northern Gateway Sports Park, creating one of the UK’s most diverse multi-sport destinations. The development was carefully planned to support elite athletes, local sports clubs, schools and community users alike, ensuring every facility could accommodate a broad range of activities while maintaining high-performance standards.
At the heart of the site is a contemporary indoor sports centre featuring a five-court sports hall, indoor cricket facilities, fitness suite, dedicated cycling gym, velo studio, flexible exercise studios, meeting rooms and café overlooking the external sports facilities. Surrounding the building are a floodlit 1.5km closed circuit cycle track, learn-to-ride area, pump track, rugby pavilion, grass and 3G pitches, archery range and equestrian trails, creating a destination that supports participation from beginner through to elite competition.
The design balances high-performance sporting requirements with an open, welcoming environment that encourages everyday community use. Extensive stakeholder engagement shaped a facility capable of supporting multiple governing bodies and sporting organisations while remaining flexible enough to evolve alongside future participation and performance needs.
