Project details
Designed in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, the extended Jubilee Sport & Recreation Centre represents an important shift in how campus leisure facilities can support student wellbeing, community connection and the wider ambitions of higher education.
Working with the University of Southampton, GT3 developed a design that removes barriers to healthy living and encourages participation across all abilities and confidence levels. The centre brings together sport, fitness, social space and access to green space, with clear sightlines into the adjacent park, a new yoga garden, social terrace spaces and activity trails connecting the building to its parkland setting.
Awarded BREEAM Excellent, the completed centre incorporates passive design measures including natural ventilation and natural light, improved airtightness and lower embodied carbon principles aligned with the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge. The result is an inclusive, sustainable and welcoming wellbeing destination that supports students, staff and the wider community.

Social Impact
Jubilee Sport & Recreation Centre supports physical, mental and social wellbeing by creating an inclusive environment where students, staff and the wider community can be active, connect and recharge. Designed in line with the university’s ‘Active for All’ ambition, the centre removes barriers to participation through welcoming spaces, clear circulation, access to green space and dedicated zones for social activity and relaxation. By opening up the facility to both the student body and local community, the project also strengthens the town-and-gown connection.
