A unique form of community-based regeneration.
Building on our town centre masterplan for Redcar, we were re-commissioned by our client to design and deliver a new, flagship leisure and community project that would redefine the urban core and act as a catalyst for future development. The project was won in competition and is the largest regeneration project in Redcar’s recent history. The design process was underpinned by a comprehensive approach to engagement which has involved the public, stakeholders and all levels of the Council, leading to a £2 million reduction in construction value and improved buy-in from the community.
Our design, which went on to win awards, combines a new leisure centre, civic facility, a business centre, car park and major public realm improvements into a single development that knits together a formerly disparate part of town. The Community Heart project, which was designed in collaboration with S&P Architects, brings together a range of council functions into a dedicated civic hub alongside a state of the art leisure centre with innovative facilities and even a static-surf ‘flow-rider’.
All functions are located around a new civic square which itself is tied back into the surrounding fabric via a tree-lined boulevard.
